Our Study Skills Workshop will introduce specific study skills designed to contribute to success in college. Students will develop useful study habits in the area of note taking, effective listening, effective reading strategies, test taking, and time management. The significance of the individual participant’s learning style will provide the backdrop for the workshop. This workshop will be particularly relevant for students entering college or adult education this fall. Please call 1-800-281-3703 to register for this workshop. Other times/dates and locations may be available. As with all MEOC workshops, please call to inquire about workshops in your area, confirm dates, times and locations, and register. Above are only the workshops for those who have already attended the MEOC 101: Essentials of College Planning workshop. However, if you feel like you would benefit from another session MEOC 101, please call our office and find out which workshop site and time would be best for you. MEOC 101 is offered numerous times during the month all over the state. Also, all MEOC Advisors/counselors maintain drop-in times at most workshop locations around the state. Please contact your MEOC Advisor/counselor for assistance with your college-related questions and challenges, and for on-going college and career planning assistance.

III. Study Tip of the Month: Starting the semester off on the right foot!

In addition to attending one of our study skills workshops, there are a few other things you may want to consider before beginning your new semester:

1. Buy a notebook specifically designated to recording assignments. You may also use a planner if you have one. Having all your assignments in one place makes it easier to see at a glance what you need to do from one week to the next so that you can plan your days accordingly.

2. Buy a three ring binder and a hole punch. Being able to add handouts, your syllabus, notes, and other work all into a three ring binder is a great way to keep organized.

3. Get help with classes you anticipate having trouble in. Often times, students wait until the end of the semester to visit the writing center or to get tutoring in classes they are having trouble in. Some times it ends up being too little, too late. If you think you're going to have trouble in your math class, get a tutor from the beginning. Set up study groups within your class if there are others who would like to have the extra time to discuss assignments and reading.

4. Make sure you have a phone number, email address or some other form of contact information for at least one person in each of your classes. This way, if you miss a class, you have someone from whom you can get the notes and find out what you missed.

5. DON'T PROCRASTINATE!! There will never be a better time to get that assignment done than right now. If you are short on time, do a little bit now, a little bit later, and so on until it is all done.
