I. Taking advantage of Student Services, Part II

In our last issue we mentioned that different colleges and universities offer a variety of services to their students. Being aware of what your college has to offer can make a huge impact on your experience as a whole. Taking a few minutes to see what services are available (and that you have likely already paid for as a part of your tuition) is highly recommended. To assist you with this learning opportunity, below is a list of links to the student services pages on various college and university websites in Maine. However, don't expect that these websites will contain a comprehensive list of services. There are likely many services available that are not listed on the college websites, so it is always best to call or visit and ask if you have need of something.

If you don't see your school on the below list and would like some assistance finding out what services your school offers their students, email sarahp@umit.maine.edu.

II. Summer Session Classes

Thinking of taking a summer class? Does the thought of covering the same material in a shorter amount of time worry you? This is a common concern when one first considers taking a summer class. The idea of completing an entire course in 3-8 weeks is distressing. However, consider this: it will likely be the only class you are taking in that time. While you'll likely have much more daily work in a condensed summer class than you would if you took it spread out over a traditional semester (plan on 2 hours of homework for every hour in class), you won't have to split your attention between 4-5 classes. You can put all your energy into doing well in just that class. For this reason, dedicated students who are not prone to procrastination may find summer classes quite manageable!

IV. Study Tip - It's test time again! Five tips to final exam success!

It's that time of year again and many of you will be taking finals soon. Final exams, whether comprehensive or not, can be very stressful as they come at the end of the semester when you are weary and in need of a break. Just keep the following in mind as you approach your end of semester studies:

1. Now is not the time to put your physical health to the side. You need to sleep, exercise, and eat a balanced diet in order to be in your top mental condition as well as your top physical condition. Avoid skimping on food or sleep in the name of study time. It's unlikely to help and will probably make it harder for you to concentrate and do your best on exams. Take regular breaks while studying and get a bite to eat, do a few jumping jacks, or take a nap.

2. On essay tests, try to write yourself an outline to follow for each question so that you can be sure to touch on all major points. Some students find it useful to write an outline on the inside cover of your "Blue Book" if your professor uses one, or on a separate piece of paper as soon as the question has been assigned.

3. On multiple choice tests, read each question and possible response carefully before answering. Don't answer until you've considered each of the options. If one question is taking too long to answer, move on and come back to it at the end if you have time.

4. If you have time left over once you have completed the exam, review your answers for possible mistakes. Check essays for clarity and spelling/grammar mistakes.

5. Once the exam is over, don't dwell on how you did. Now is the time to prepare for your other exams. It won't do any good to worry about a test you have already taken and will likely make it difficult to concentrate on your other assignments.

Good luck on your finals!
