Greetings from the Maine Educational Opportunity Center!!Please visit us online at http://meoc.maine.edu/ In this month's issue:
I. Taking Advantage of Student Services Having trouble writing your paper? Want to write a resume but you need some direction? Looking for a new apartment but not having any luck? These are issues that are common and recurring in college life. Fortunately, most colleges and universities have a variety of services available to help college students. These might include writing centers, career centers, information booths that contain apartment listings, bus schedules, and contact sheets for a variety of purposes. Take the time to find out what services are available at your college or university. Most of the time, you've already paid for these services as part of your tuition, so take advantage of them! II. Study Tip - Avoiding unintentional plagiarism Plagiarism is a common problem at colleges and universities across the country. Plagiarism can result in public embarrassment, a failing grade, and sometimes even being expelled from college. The scariest thing about plagiarism is that many students don't even know they're guilty of it! Arm yourself with the knowledge necessary to avoid plagiarism as most of the time, ignorance will not be an acceptable excuse. The University of Indiana's website defines plagiarism and gives several clarifying examples: http://www.indiana.edu/~wts/wts/plagiarism.htm lIII. Upcoming Workshops - call 1-800-281-3703 to ask questions or to register! The Financial Aid Workshop will provide an overview of financial aid basics and the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and FAFSA Renewal forms. Discussion will include a review of federal, state, school-based, and private funding sources, and how the student can effectively access the funding they need to complete their college degree. An emphasis will be placed on student responsibility and an understanding of the full financial aid process and timetable. Participants are encouraged to bring their 2003 income details to the workshop. (Good estimates of earned income and non-taxable income totals for 2003 will make FAFSA completion easier.) Participants should be current college students or prospective college students who have attended an earlier Essentials of College Planning Workshop with MEOC. Please call 1-800-281-3703 to register for this workshop. Registering is the only way we know are able to notify you if the workshop is canceled, rescheduled or moved. This workshop is not offered year-round, so take advantage while you have the chance!
